What we coach
As Academy+ is specifically about preparing players for trials, and extending beyond the Winter program, we focus on the following Spirit player actions…
- Being relentless when defending by trying to win it back quickly if we lose the ball. We will focus on this week implicitly over the five weeks by rewarding players with bonus points in games, to further encourage this behaviour
- This is because players who work hard defensively in trials tend to be noticed more by coaches. It also aligns to Spirit’s club values.
- Using both feet to receive the ball then pass the ball, as this allows players to face forward more often, and move the ball quickly away from pressure
- This is because players who can use both feet can ‘go both ways’ with the ball, making them more effective & unpredictable.
- Finding space to shoot (which we call “getting free enough” to shoot) by shifting the ball before shooting (ideally with both feet)
- This is because this is an X-factor that generally translates to being able to score goals at higher levels when the game is faster
- Good 1v1 defending, by getting low to the ground, being side on to the ball, moving your feet with small steps, and recognising when to delay or tackle
- This is because when scouting for defenders, the players ability to defend 1v1 is generally the first action that is assessed
As you’ll notice, each coaching point relates specifically to things that individual players do in football. This is because we believe in developing a “DNA” in players that allows them to succeed across the footballing pathway. Accordingly, we believe it is more important to focus on individual actions (what we call Spirit player actions) so that each player develops that DNA.

How to prepare your child for trials
Trials can be a stressful moment for players and parents. Although they are a normal part of talent identification and talent development systems, they can still be scary, with many unknowns. Accordingly, we have some key tips we provide to players entering trials.
- Enjoy the opportunity to play football! Trials are a chance to showcase your skills and passion for the game. Play with a smile and try to enjoy the moment. In particular, come into the trial knowing you will make mistakes, that this is normal, and what coaches are looking for is a positive mindset to these moments.
- Showcase your strengths. Coaches are often looking for players who have clear ‘X-factors’ – the footballing qualities & attributes that will set them apart from their peers. An example of this would be a striker who can score off both feet. Whatever your X-factor, we want to see you demonstrate it in the trial. This is particularly important because in trials, coaches are selecting players, not de-selecting players. Accordingly, we are looking for the players that stand out and will improve a team.
- Work hard. This is a core value of the NWSF/NWS Spirit FC environment and is something that can make the difference in a trial. An example of this would be working hard to get behind the ball, after losing possession. This would be a way of reacting positively to mistakes (which are a normal part of trials!). It also demonstrates to the coaches your willingness to improve, a desire to compete, and willingness to be a team player.
- Be respectful throughout. Small details like acknowledging a coach, making eye contact and being the first to follow instructions are good indicators that you have good values. This is an important part of success in football and in life.
